Athletic Club vs. Alavés: La Liga Matchday 7 Tactical Preview and Starting XIs

A Tactical Collision at San Mamés

As the dust settles on the early stages of the 2024/25 La Liga campaign, Matchday 7 presents a fascinating encounter between Athletic Club and Deportivo Alavés. With both teams eyeing a strong finish before the upcoming international break, the stakes at the iconic San Mamés stadium have never been higher. Alavés, the surprise package of the season, arrives in Bilbao sitting comfortably in sixth place with 10 points, looking to prove that their early-season form is no fluke.

Athletic Club, meanwhile, is eager to capitalize on home advantage to climb the standings. The atmosphere in Bilbao is expected to be electric as the home side looks to impose their high-pressing style on a well-drilled Alavés outfit. For manager Ernesto Valverde, this match represents a litmus test for his squad’s depth and tactical flexibility.

The Strategic Landscape

Alavés, managed by Luis García Plaza, has exceeded expectations by maintaining a disciplined defensive structure while remaining lethal on the counter-attack. Their ability to transition quickly from defense to attack has been the hallmark of their success thus far. To secure a result against Athletic, they will need to neutralize the wide threats posed by the Williams brothers and manage the physicality of the midfield battle.

Athletic Club’s approach remains rooted in intensity and verticality. Playing at home, they are expected to dominate possession and force Alavés into errors in their own half. The key for the Basque side will be clinical finishing, an area where they have shown inconsistency in recent weeks. The battle for midfield control between the veteran pivots of Athletic and the industrious engines of Alavés will likely dictate the flow of the match.

Players to Watch

• Iñaki Williams (Athletic Club): His blistering pace remains the primary weapon for Athletic. His ability to stretch the Alavés backline will be critical in creating space for his teammates.
• Toni Martínez (Alavés): As the focal point of the Alavés attack, Martínez’s hold-up play and aerial presence will be vital in relieving pressure against Athletic’s aggressive press.
• Oihan Sancet (Athletic Club): The creative heartbeat of the team, Sancet’s movement between the lines is often the catalyst for Athletic's goal-scoring opportunities.

Looking Ahead: The Importance of the Break

With the international break looming, both managers are acutely aware that a positive result could define the narrative for the coming weeks. A win for Alavés would cement their status as a legitimate contender for European spots, while a victory for Athletic would provide the momentum needed to push toward the top four.

Injury management and squad rotation will play a significant role in how these teams navigate the remaining minutes of the match. With a congested schedule ahead, the bench depth will be tested, and both Valverde and García Plaza will be looking to their substitutes to provide the necessary impact in the final quarter of the game.

Tactical Expectations

Analysts predict a high-energy contest. Alavés will likely adopt a low-to-mid block, inviting pressure to exploit the gaps left by Athletic’s overlapping fullbacks. Athletic, fueled by the home crowd, will aim to suffocate Alavés early, hoping for an early goal to force the visitors out of their shell.

Regardless of the outcome, this encounter serves as a reminder of the depth and competitiveness of La Liga. Even in the early stages of the season, every point is vital, and the tactical chess match between Valverde and García Plaza promises to be one of the highlights of the weekend. Fans should expect a physical, high-stakes encounter where discipline and tactical execution will outweigh individual brilliance.
