In a significant development for the generative AI landscape, Anthropic has officially announced the restoration of access to its advanced Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 models. This update follows a brief but impactful period of service suspension that began on June 12, when the US government implemented new export controls on the company’s latest AI technologies.
The regulatory action forced Anthropic to immediately restrict access to these models for all foreign nationals, regardless of their physical location. Due to the rapid implementation of the order and the technical challenges associated with real-time nationality verification, the company made the difficult decision to suspend these specific models entirely to remain in full compliance with federal directives.
As of June 30, those restrictions have been formally lifted, allowing Anthropic to move forward with a phased rollout. The company confirmed the news following official government communication, providing much-needed clarity for developers and enterprise customers who rely on the Claude ecosystem for mission-critical workflows.
Beginning Wednesday, July 1, Claude Fable 5 will be available to users globally across the entire Claude product suite. This includes:
- Claude.ai: The primary web interface for individual users.
- Claude Platform: For developers integrating via API.
- Claude Code: The specialized environment for software engineering tasks.
- Claude Cowork: Anthropic’s collaborative AI workspace tool.
For those utilizing paid subscription tiers—including Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans—Anthropic has introduced a transitional usage model. To ensure stability and fair access during the initial re-launch period, Fable 5 will be included for up to 50% of standard weekly usage limits through July 7. Following this one-week grace period, access will transition to the standard usage credit system, which allows for more granular management of account resources.
While the web and platform access is being prioritized, the company is working diligently to re-enable access across major cloud infrastructure providers. Anthropic stated that they are coordinating with AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry to restore the models as quickly as possible, ensuring that enterprise-grade deployments can resume their operations without further delay.
While Fable 5 is seeing a broad, global release, the situation for the more advanced Claude Mythos 5 remains more specialized. Access to Mythos 5 has been restored specifically for a targeted set of US-based organizations, following government approval granted on June 26.
This tiered approach is closely tied to Anthropic’s ongoing "Project Glasswing" initiative. The company emphasized that it continues to work in close coordination with federal regulators to expand access to both domestic and international partners involved in the Glasswing program. This effort underscores the delicate balance between rapid AI innovation and the stringent requirements of national security and export compliance.
This incident highlights the growing intersection between artificial intelligence development and geopolitical regulation. As AI models become increasingly powerful, they are being treated with a level of scrutiny previously reserved for dual-use technologies and advanced hardware. For users, this means that the availability of cutting-edge models may occasionally be subject to rapid shifts in the regulatory environment.
Anthropic’s swift response to the suspension—and its transparent communication regarding the restoration—serves as a case study in how AI firms must navigate federal oversight. By prioritizing compliance while maintaining an active dialogue with regulators, the company is attempting to ensure that its most advanced research remains viable while adhering to the legal frameworks governing the distribution of high-performance computing assets.
